Apple ends Aperture and iPhoto

The professional-level photo editor, Aperture, is being discontinued by Apple. Introduced in 2005, the high-end product never caught up with Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom. Instead, Apple will cease development of Aperture — and the consumer-friendly iPhoto — to focus on a mobile-and-desktop solution called Photos.

“With the introduction of the new Photos app and iCloud Photo Library, enabling you to safely store all of your photos in iCloud and access them from anywhere, there will be no new development of Aperture. When Photos for OS X ships next year, users will be able to migrate their existing Aperture libraries to Photos for OS X.”
Apple, June 27, 2014
