$3B for Snapchat? That’s boring. In less than a month, the radar has turned to another photography website that is on the Christmas shopping list of a big company — Imgur.

“Yahoo reportedly wants to buy popular photo-sharing site Imgur.”
CNet, Dec 9, 2013

Pronounced “imager”, Imgur was started four years ago in 2009 as a photo-sharing site for users of Reddit. With only ten employees, Imgur is now the 28th-most-popular website in the U.S. and, apparently, worth about $200M to Yahoo.

Imgur and Yahoo

“This fall, Yahoo began serious talks to buy photo-sharing site Imgur, a source with first-hand knowledge of those discussions tells us.”
BusinessInsider, Dec 9, 2013

“[A] source said the deal ‘might be up to $200 million.’”
Nitasha Tiku, ValleyWag, Dec 9, 2013

“[This] would be another weapon with which Yahoo can continue its pursuit of the youth market — and would bring additional social chops to Flickr, Yahoo’s photo-hosting site.”
Addy Dugdale, Fast Company

“Perhaps the most high-profile of those who have shown interest in Imgur is Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer, who has visited the startup multiple times recently, sources said. Her company has already gotten a foot in the door with a hosting partnership that was signed in February of this year, but was never announced.”

About Imgur

“Imgur … is an online image hosting service founded by Alan Schaaf in 2009 in Athens, Ohio.”
Wikipedia

“In September [2013], Imgur marked a significant milestone, passing 100 million unique users for the month.”
Megan Garber, The Atlantic, Dec 4, 2013

“I got fed up with all the other image hosts out there so I made my own. It doesn’t force you to compress your images, and it has neat things like crop, resize, rotate, and compression from 10-100. It’s my gift to you. Let’s not see anymore imageshack/photobucket around here ;)”
Alan Schaaf, founder of Imgur, on Reddit

“An image on Imgur is a picture that is not only worth 1,000 words; it is also, often, accompanied by them.”
Megan Garber, The Atlantic, Dec 4, 2013
